This Choir Needs You!
Staying Young
“Well, I’ve heard some stay young health tips in my time, but
what about this one?
‘Want to stay younger looking? Then join a choir. People who
sing exercise their facial muscles, preventing wrinkles’
Now, maybe you’re not unduly worried about wrinkles, but it did
make me think, and assess the value of singing in general. To start with, you
cannot remain angry with someone while singing; it can stop you feeling lonely,
and many of us do get lonely at times; it can raise your spirits on a rainy
day., so sing along with the radio, The words don’t matter , but the important
thing is just to join in and sing, and you’ll be surprised at the change in
many a dreary day.”
This is where we beg to
differ with the author (unknown) of the above piece. We say, better still
join a choir. In a choir, the words do matter, of course, as do pitch and
harmony. Give it a try, though. You may surprise yourself. Contact our
secretary.
Warrington
Male Voice Choir is always seeking to recruit new members. We don’t expect you
to be a professional musician, but if you can sing, are interested in choral
singing, and willing to commit yourself to twice weekly rehearsals, between the
hours of 7.30pm and 9.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays, then you will be made very
welcome. If you can read music it is obviously helpful, but not essential. In
the
main, you should have a good sense of pitch, self-discipline, and
the desire to succeed. Our musical staff will do the rest.
Come
along to a rehearsal, and sit at the back and listen. Enjoy a cup of tea or
coffee with us during the interval. Nobody will press you into joining, but
choristers will be pleased to chat to you about what they get out of belonging
to the choir, and to answer your questions. If you feel that you want to do more
than listen, then, on your next visit, you may be invited to sit next to
choristers to see how they handle the music that is being rehearsed. You can
join in. You may be pleasantly surprised by your own efforts. If all is well,
you will be offered a simple voice test to determine your vocal range (will you
be a bass, a baritone, or one of the tenor voices?). If we like the sound of
you, and you like the sound of us, and you are prepared to abide by a few rules
and conditions, then you're in.
The
choir needs new members in all sections, but especially, in first tenors and
second basses.
If you feel you'd like to give it a go, then phone Ian Scholes, Choir
Secretary, on 01925 815095, or email him at ianscholes@warringtonchoir.org.uk
