Those Who Lead The Choir
The Chairman:
Barrie
Johnson, second tenor, joined the choir in 1972, and was elected chairman in
1984. He has been instrumental,
not only in restoring WMVC to its former standing as one of Britain's foremost
choirs, but as the driving force behind its association with the Northern
Ireland Peace Movement. Recognized as an
innovator, he has been responsible for creating many of the modernizing
practices enjoyed by today's choir.
Barrie holds post graduate
qualifications from Liverpool and Manchester Universities. He is married
to Muriel, and they have three daughters. He is the author of twenty four story
books for children, and has recently retired after a successful career in
education. An amateur historian, he is currently compiling a history of the
choir for publication.
Barrie may be contacted by
email at barriejohnson@warringtonchoir.org.uk
The Secretary:
Ian
Scholes, retired undertaker, and one time Warrington policeman, is the butt of many a jest about keeping choristers in order, and sizing
them up at the same time. Ian joined the Choir in 1983, with, in his own words,
"much trepidation". Again, in his own words, he “wasn't ever a Basso
Profundo, but if I worked at it I could become a credible Baritone”. He
was duly elected to the choir committee, became secretary in 2001, and has done
sterling work in the role ever since. Ian believes in harmony, in every sense,
and very much enjoys the camaraderie of the choir.
